Reasons Why You Should Reduce Moisture in Bathrooms
- On September 30, 2021
Those droplets of water on the walls and the moisture in the mirror after using the bathroom are but normal in every household.
No one in the house bothers to address it because it’s just inevitable. It looks harmless anyway.
However, no matter how normal it is to have a moist bathroom, it’s unhealthy in the long run. It makes the room and everything in it deteriorate faster. Soon, if you don’t address moisture in your bathroom, you will have to make repairs and installations that require professional plumbing services.
Why is there too much moisture in bathroom?
The main reason is nature. When warm air circulates and touches the cold parts of the bathroom like the mirror, tiles, counters, and steel shelves, warm air condenses into liquid to form drops of water on the surface.
This seems inevitable because breathing alone can release warm air in the bathroom, more so when we stay too long inside while taking a shower. If you have more members in the household, that would also mean more shower time and more moisture generated inside the bathroom.
Don’t feel hopeless though. There are ways to address moisture and prevent them from damaging the bathroom.
Let’s start by knowing the activities that can cause moisture.
Bathing
Whenever one takes a bath, steam comes out from the body. Breathing and moving release warm air which eventually circulates inside the bathroom. This warm air will soon turn into droplets when it touches a cold surface.
Cold surfaces
There are so many cold surfaces in the bathroom like mirrors, walls, and tiles. These cold surfaces cause warm circulating air to condense into water and produce moisture in the whole bathroom.
Household activities
Another causes for moisture are warm-air-inducing activities like cooking. When you leave your bathroom open while you cook, warm air can get inside the bathroom and start circulating inside. This adds moisture inside the bathroom.
Other activities like washing clothes and regular cleaning also adds moisture in the bathroom. As longs as someone stays in the bathroom for a long time, it results in additional warm air circulating inside.
Bad effects of moisture in bathrooms
Metals rust easily
If you have shelves and storage equipment in the bathroom that are made of metals, moisture in the bathroom can cause more damage. As we know, constant exposure to water and moisture causes metals to rust easily. If you keep your bathroom moist, expect your shelves and storage equipment to rust after a few months.
If your water heater is made of metal, moisture can also damage the surfaces of this plumbing appliance. When your water heater gets too damaged, you will have no other choice but to do water heater installation.
Molds develop
It is an ugly sigh to see molds developing on the walls. When these molds grow, they will peel your paint, adhesives attached on the wall, and wallpapers glued to it.
Moisture in the bathroom is the culprit of these molds. If you don’t want molds to grow in your bathroom, you really have to prevent too much moisture inside.
Bathroom becomes smelly
Molds smell unclean and irritating. When moist air circulates, molds grow and that sticky and steamy unclean atmosphere dominates your bathroom all the time. No matter how beautiful your bathroom fixtures are, they will be useless if your bathroom smells bad.
Dust and dirt get stuck
Dust and dirt can easily get stuck in a moist bathroom. They can stick with droplets of water lurking around your bathroom, and they can get very difficult to remove the moment they dry up.
You might notice gray and dark spots on your tile and grout. These are dust and dirt that dried up on the surface because of too much moisture in the bathroom.
