8 Ways to Keep the Sink Clog-Free
- On November 14, 2020
The holidays are arriving again! Wow! Time flies so fast.
This year has been challenging for all of us but that should not silent the holiday spirit inside of us.
It’s still the yuletide season and we owe it to ourselves to celebrate and be thankful that we have survived the storms of 2020.
When we talk about celebration, a feast is always part of the equation. Moms get busy searching for the perfect holiday recipes and cooking the best food you’ll ever taste the whole year. Dining tables will once again overflow with different dishes from a variety of main courses, soups, fruits, candies, hot chocolate, liquor, and soda!
It feels great to imagine the delicious feast that we’re about to enjoy, but can you also imagine the amount of grease and food crumbs that your drain is about to experience?
According to experts in plumbing services, the main causes of sink clogging are common to almost all households. Based on these main causes, we listed down below the eight things that you can do to prevent sink clogging. Here they are.
Tie your hair when washing the dishes
Hair remains to be the number 1 cause of sink clogging according to professional plumbers who always save homeowners from plumbing nightmares. That doesn’t surprise us at all because the thin strands of our hair can get down the sink without us noticing it.
In order to lessen the chance of hair falling into the drain, our first advice is to tie your hair when washing the dishes or anytime you’re using the sink.
Be careful with the eggshells
Stop the habit of cracking the eggs near the sink. Do it on the table instead so the egg shells won’t get drained under the sink. They also cause clogging when they pile up on the pipes.
Dispose the Grease Separately
Needless to say, grease is a major cause of gunk buildup on the pipes under the sink. Our advice is to be mindful of the grease on the cooking pan and casseroles. Instead of pouring them on the sink, dispose them in a separate container.
Run hot water after every use
Now that you know the things to keep out of the sink, the next thing you need to know are ways on how to prevent clogging. First is by draining hot water on the sink after every use. This shouldn’t take a lot of time, and should be considered a final shower on the sink before leaving it.
Another layer of draining
We know that the drain cover on our sink is not 100% guarantee that no crumbs will enter the pipes underneath. For some smart moms, they use a strainer to drain water from the cooking pans instead of pouring it directly to the sink. This way, the residue will be drained on the strainer before they get the final filter through the sink drain. Smart, right?
Clean the strainers
We don’t know if it’s part of your sink cleaning habits to also clean the strainers. This is very important because some particles caught by the strainer can be reduced to a smaller size and finally get into the pipes. That’s why it will be a big help to clear the strainers from dirt as part of your sink cleaning habits.
Use a natural cleaning method
One practical way to clean your sink is by using natural ingredients. All you need is baking soda, vinegar, and a hot water. First, let the vinegar flow down the drain, and then pour the baking soda. Let this combination form a foam. After a minute or two, pour down hot water on the drain to flush out the gunk that was diluted.
Get regular inspection
Finally, get at least one annual plumbing inspection for your whole house to find out what needs to be repaired or replaced. There’s no way you can see pipes that need a repair or a replacement unless you have them inspected.
